Michigan Ranks Near Bottom for Child Care in New 2026 Study
A new study about working moms is shining a light on child care shortcomings in the state of Michigan.
Whenever I see one of these new nationwide studies comparing all the states to one another, I always check to see how Michigan fares. If there's something good (or bad) to talk about, I like to do that here. This time, the news isn't great.
Where Michigan Falls in 2026 Rankings
A new report is out from the personal finance website WalletHub ranking the "Best States for Working Moms" in 2026. Michigan lands kind of in the middle of the pack. Actually, a little below it. We come in at #36 overall this year, and when you zoom in on child care specifically, it's not exactly a glowing review.
Michigan ranks 12th worst in the nation in child care.
The “Middle of the Pack” Problem
On paper, some things look okay. Costs? Middle of the road (25th). Daycare quality? Also middle-ish (29th). Access to pediatricians and workers per child? Again, hovering in that "meh" zone. Maybe you're thinking, "Alright, not ideal, but not a disaster."
It gets worse.
The Biggest Red Flag: Accreditation
According to study author Chip Lupo, limited access to nationally accredited child care centers stands out as a key weakness for the state.

"Michigan ranks 48th in the share of nationally accredited child care centers, making it one of the lowest in the country in this metric," Lupo says. "This suggests that while childcare options exist, fewer meet higher national quality benchmarks, which can influence both quality, consistency and parental trust."
If you're a parent trying to figure out who to trust with your kid while you're at work, that's kind of a big deal.
It’s Bigger Than Just Daycare
This study also ranked Michigan 37th for overall school system quality. Suddenly, it's not just a daycare issue — it's all the things involved in raising and supporting kids while also trying to hold down a job.

It all boils down to this: Michigan's child care set-up is functional, but lots of other states are doing a better job for working families. The Mitten State's got room to improve.
