The United States has stopped minting pennies—the very last ones came off the press in Philadelphia on Wednesday, November 12.
These days, there's not much you can buy with a penny. But, there is one thing that costs a penny that holds a special place in the heart of many Michiganders, and that's a ride on Sandy the Pony.
Meijer's Sandy the Pony Ride
Sandy the Pony is a pony ride for kids that has been a staple at Meijer since 1962. It famously has only cost one penny. However, with the disappearance of the penny, what's going to happen to Sandy's fate?

Sandy is certainly a highlight for so many children and their families who shop at Meijer. I know my toddler is a big fan, so I was pretty worried about what would happen to Sandy the Pony.

Thankfully, Sandy isn’t going anywhere—at least, not anytime soon.
What's Happening to Sandy the Pony?
Meijer says that Sandy is a very important member of the Meijer team, and has assured us that Sandy is sticking around, despite the disappearance of the penny. Meijer Historian Lisa VanArragon says Meijer is working on a long-term solution to keep Sandy affordable to the families that enjoy her.

With over 270 stores across the Midwest, that's a lot of Sandys around the Midwest bringing joy to kids. I'm glad the Meijer team is making sure she sticks around.
