Is Buddy's Pizza Michigan's 'Best Regional Fast Food'?

Lovefood.com recently named the "best regional fast food in every US state", and there's a little problem with the place they picked to represent Michigan.

The popular foodie website chose Detroit-based Buddy's Pizza as Michigan's "best regional fast food", citing its rectangular pizzas with "extra-crunchy corners for crust lovers" and soft and fluffy centers.

Don't get us wrong - Buddy's Pizza is amazing - but it just doesn't belong on this list.

Why Buddy's Pizza Should Not Be Considered Michigan's "Best Regional Fast Food"

It's pretty simple, really. Buddy's Pizza isn't fast food.

Each pizza at Buddy's is crafted by hand at the time of order. There are no "hot-n-ready" options like, say, Little Caesars.

Even though Buddy's Pizza's 23 Michigan locations offer carry-out and delivery options like most pizzerias, its sit-down space is clearly not that of a fast food restaurant either. Fast food restaurants call you to the counter when your food's ready, or serve you through a drive-thru window. That's not the Buddy's experience.

This Is the Restaurant That's Rightfully Michigan's "Best Regional Fast Food"

If you want a fast food experience that's authentically Michigan, it's Flint-based Halo Burger.

With just 5 locations today, clustered around the greater Flint area, Halo Burger may not have the name recognition of a Buddy's Pizza, but it checks the boxes for actually being fast food and an actual Michigan treasure.

There's spirited disagreement among a few Michigan cities as to the true birthplace of the olive burger, but Halo Burger - which started out as Kewpee - lays claim to being its creator back in the 1920s.

The chain still pays homage to its Kewpee roots with its signature "QP" and "Double QP" burgers. It leans in hard to distinguish itself from national burger chains, with Michigan's own Vernors ginger ale and Koegel's hot dogs on the menu too.

Those around Flint know. If you're ever in the area and spot a Halo Burger, do yourself a favor and pull in. You'll soon understand why Halo Burger is really Michigan's "best regional fast food".
