Waterfront West Michigan Restaurant Reopens Five Years After Fire

A West Michigan lakeside eatery is back in business after a fire shut it down in 2018.

Smuggler's at North Shore is now open at 864 E 88th St. in Newaygo, on the shores of Lake Hess.

Under new ownership, the restaurant's name is a callback to the previous establishments Smuggler’s Cove and North Shore.

According to WZZM-13, the contemporary casual restaurant's menu was designed by executive chef Michael Allen who says,

I think I designed the menu to be different than the local everywhere. I want to appeal to all age groups, all socioeconomic levels. I think it's important that you're accessible to the populace zones… If you can appeal to everybody, then you can bring them in, you know, it makes the offseason not an offseason.

For appetizers you'll find Whitefish Dip, Chicken Wonton Tacos, Mexican Street Corn Ribs, Smoked Chicken Wings, Pork Carnitas Nachos, and more.

There's a selection of soups and salads, plus sandwiches like Chicago Style Italian Beef, Seafood Po Boy, Corned Beef Reuben, and Chicken and Waffles.

Smuggler's also serves up Smash Burgers like The Cowboy, The Oklahoma Onion, and the Truffle Mushroom Gruyere Burger.

Woodfired Pizzas come with a variety of meats, sauces, cheese, and veggies. The Captain Josh Sparrow pictured below is modeled after a "celebration cake".

Entrees include Filet Mignon, Goat Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breast, Perch Tacos, and Walleye.

For pasta, enjoy Bolognese, Gemelli Pasta Alfredo, or Three Cheese Tortellini.

Smuggler's Cove serves Michigan-centric cocktails and beer on draft, in cans, and in bottles.

The new restaurant is open is open  Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and  Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Ownership says this weekend (September 22-24) they'll be seating on a first come, first served basis. Starting next week, Smugglers at North Shore will be accepting reservations through Open Table.
