The Michigan city of Iron Mountain sits in Dickinson County in the Upper Peninsula, 50 miles west of Escanaba.

Iron Mountain was named after exactly what you think it was: a mountain loaded with iron - the settlement was nearby a cliff full of iron ore. The area was settled in 1879, became an official village in 1887, and a city in 1889.

The Iron Mountain mine closed in 1945, and when mining operations came to a halt in the 1980s, Iron Mountain’s economy depended on tourism, winter sports, and the lumber industry. Now an historical landmark, tours are available throughout he mine.
