Lansing’s Huapei Restaurant Sits Abandoned on Mount Hope Road
While working down on Mount Hope Road back in the 1980s, as soon as lunchtime hit, we would drive down the road to the Huapei restaurant.
At that time, they were still fairly new, not having been open very long...but man, was that food tasty! Chinese and Korean cuisine that made our mouths water...
The Huapei was located on the corner of Mount Hope and Herbert Street (401 E. Mount Hope) in a small, unassuming building that used to be an old grocery store. It was easy to pass by and miss if you weren’t looking for it, because it didn’t have flashy signs or cartoon mascots to lure customers in. The Huapei survived for 40 years thanks to word-of-mouth...people who just happened to find the restaurant would give it a try, love it, tell their friends and family about it, and keep coming back for more.

Forty years from when we started visiting the Huapei, they finally closed down, on June 30, 2022.
For we die-hard fans of Huapei, the good news is, they are not done yet. They now operate Udon Sushi at 134 N. Harrison Road in East Lansing...and the customer raves continue! If you are one of the many who miss the Huapei, check out Udon.
Meantime, the former building on Mount Hope that was once the Huapei, sits alone, reminding passersby about the wonderful meals they experienced inside...
