Images of the Old Michigan State Sanatorium, Howell: 1907-1982
There are still a number of people who have heard about the old Michigan State Sanatorium located in Howell.....and want to explore it.
Well, you're out of luck. It was torn down in the 1980s.
From 1907 to 1982, this sanatorium took care of hundreds of people who were stricken with tuberculosis. Children and adults of both sexes filled all six floors and cost only seven dollars a week. Some patients were admitted by the state, and therefore didn't have to pay.
Formerly located at 3125 High Hillcrest Drive, it was originally named the Michigan State Sanatorium. It later became more of an asylum when people with mental disabilities were admitted. It was then re-named the Howell State Hospital.
In 1907 it was listed as the State Sanitorium for Consumptives, and in 1921 listed in directories as the State Sanitarium for Tuberculosis.
The patients didn't just sit around staring blankly at walls; there was plenty of things to do. Patients were encouraged to work in the apple orchard, convenience store, farm, or post office. They could take care of the plants or become a member of the kitchen staff. Aside from being productive, there was time for games and entertainment.
The sanatorium permanently closed in 1982 because the state could no longer afford to keep it going. Soon afterward, the rumors about the old place being haunted began: voices, ghostly figures wandering inside and out, etc.
But then the buildings were demolished in 1985. After being sold in 1987, a subdivision was developed on the property and some lavish homes were being constructed. for upscale, large homes was developed on the property.
Once located at 3125 High Hillcrest Drive in Howell, the once-haunting image of the old sanatorium still sticks in the minds of those who remember...
