Ernest Hemingway and Horton Bay, Michigan
Here is one historic northern Michigan town that still has a nice handful of it's old, original buildings, all kept up and looking GREAT.
Horton Bay on Lake Charlevoix is...well...CHARMING. The area is friendly, inviting and it has kept its old 1800's atmosphere by saving & preserving some of their old establishments: the church, the old 1876 general store, one-room schoolhouse, and township hall. TAKE A LOOK AT THE PHOTOS BELOW and see for yourself.
The town originated sometime around 1870 as a (what else) lumber town in Charlevoix County. Along with the above-mentioned establishments, Horton Bay also had a second general store, bank, blacksmith, hotel, several restaurants and cemetery (still there).
Author Ernest Hemingway used to hang out in Horton Bay (sometimes mistakenly referred to as "Horton's Bay") and he was married in a church (now gone) that was right next to the old general store (find out much more about the old general store's history by CLICKING HERE).
If you visit, there as an antique shop and a Bed & Breakfast if you choose to stay over. Either way, there are some GREAT photo ops here, especially for anyone interested in Michigan history. By the way, the old general store is still in business and has an entire section dedicated to Hemingway with plenty of stories about the time he spent in Horton Bay.....stop in during your Michigan roadtrip!
