Going to the Mall in the 1970s Was a Different Experience
Westwood Mall, Lansing Mall, Meridian Mall, Briarwood Mall.....During the 1970s, just about EVERYbody went to the mall...and each age group had their different reasons.
TEENS THRU THEIR 20s:
Hang out, go to the arcade, scope the opposite sex, go to the record stores.
30s THRU THEIR 50s:
They actually went there to shop.
60S ON UP:
Walk thru the halls for an extended period of time just for the exercise.
The malls back in the 70s were melting pots that consisted of all ages, all races, with all reasons (and none at all) to just “go to the mall”. It was something that was available when there was nothing else to do that sounded good.
Yeah, we still go to the malls but it has changed so much. If you weren't around in the 70s then you don't know what I mean. The sounds of the arcade games permeated the air and the unexpected sights at Spencer's Gifts dropped the jaws of many.
Photos and words can only do so much; you had to live it to fully understand. Scroll down a little bit and see a gallery of images of what the malls were like in the late 1970s...
