What’s This Giant Megaphone Doing in the Cheboygan County Woods?
A giant megaphone in the woods?
What the heck is it for?
Somebody taking yodeling lessons?
No phone service up there?
Someone holding an outdoor concert for bears?
Nope.
This huge wooden megaphone sits on a hill in the Northern Michigan woods. You can actually get inside this thing and listen to all the wildlife and woodland sounds that are amplified straight to you. You and your partner can crawl into this thing and just lie there, absorbing all the primitive sounds around you.
You’ll find this very unique Michigan curiosity along a trail in the Agnes S. Andreae/Boyd B. Banwell Nature Preserve of Indian River in Cheboygan County.
According to Michiganbackroads.com, “After a few moments you may be aware of the forest in a whole new way. Some people say they don't really notice the effect until they crawl back out of the megaphone.”
It is surprisingly more quiet outside the megaphone than inside.
Once you park, it’s a 25-minute hike to the megaphone, which includes a boardwalk and wooden walk/bridge across the river. The best time to go is on a weekday when there are less visitors around to interrupt the wildlife sounds.
