The stretch of M-52 that runs between Stockbridge and Chelsea is sometimes called the “Ghost Highway” because of the paranormal rumors that surround it.

Growing up in Stockbridge, I heard some weird tales but never about M-52.

Yeah, there have been a good number of accidents on M-52, and the crosses and memorials that appear randomly alongside the road attest to that. Some locals claim that the spirits of accident victims haunt the road.

M-52 has many curves, hills, and blind spots between the two above-mentioned towns, so numerous accidents are no surprise. Sometime shadowy human figures have been seen along the road, as are strange 'lights' that are believed to be emanating from spirits. Upon getting closer to the lights, they disappear.

Evidently, there are paranormal seekers who frequent that stretch of road, hoping to catch a glimpse – especially of one apparition in particular: The Woman in White. She appears as a 'ghostly figure' next to – and sometimes on - the road.

Many night time drivers have said they've had a feeling of dread and apprehension as they drive down that road alone.

There's another spot just off the highway on Farnsworth Road – a dirt road where the North Waterloo Cemetery lies. It's said that the dead who are buried there contribute to the paranormal activity experienced on M-52, just a tenth of a mile away.

As with any rumor or claims of hauntings or paranormal activity, believe what you want to believe - or not at all.

Next time YOU are driving alone on M-52 at night between Stockbridge and Chelsea, don't scour the roadsides looking for something spooky; keep your eyes on the road.....or you just may end up being one of the spirits along the road yourself...
