Michigan Ghost Town That Began as a Postal Stop: Ocqueoc

If you're on a Michigan roadtrip, one of the most fun things you can do is check out a few ghost towns...and this is one of 'em.

Ocqueoc was intended solely as a postal station in Presque Isle County, not as a village or town. The post office was established in 1893 but that wasn't enough to serve the few residents; so it soon doubled as a general store with Charles Glawe doing double-duty as postmaster and storekeeper.

This little postal station unexpectedly grew to a whoppin' 26 residents by 1910 and seven years later, a new postmaster took charge.

How do you pronounce this name in the first place? "Ock-KEE-ock". It was named after the township and the Ocqueoc River. It's gotta be a Native American term, right? Yup. The meaning has been debated; either 'crooked waters' or 'sacred' depending who you ask. Ocqueoc Falls are the largest falls in the lower peninsula - just 2 ½ miles southeast.

Ocqueoc can still be found on maps and makes for an interesting stop. Located at the junction of North Allis Highway and North Ocqueoc Road, 33 miles southeast of Cheboygan and 44 miles northwest of Alpena.
