Genesee County Sheriff's deputies and police agencies across the state are dealing with a Michigan-wide auto theft ring that seems like the plot of an after-school special. According to Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, when speaking with WNEM, this plot employs "14 to 24-year-olds" all over the state.

Swanson explains that these young Michiganders can't grasp the long-term consequences of their actions. They can only see the $1,000 payday they get when they steal a vehicle, not the grand theft auto charges and the time and fines it carries. As one of the alleged GTA ring members found out, fleeing from police in one of these stolen vehicles doesn't end well for the thief.

Stolen Porsche's Getaway Ended by Grand Blanc Police

If you're unfamiliar with the term "stop stick," they are collapsable metal devices designed to pop the tires of a vehicle evading the police. They are to tires what Legos are to bare feet.

Grand Blanc Police used a stop stick to end a high-speed chase on Monday, March 24, 2025, involving a Porsche stolen from a nearby car lot. The getaway ended on I-75 at Exit 106, which wasn't what the thief hoped for. ABC 12 reports the suspect was taken to the hospital, where he is still listed in critical condition but is expected to recover. You can see the dashcam video and report from ABC 12 below.

Swanson warned those involved that the Genesee Auto-Theft Investigation Network (GAIN), which has already recovered $5.8 million in stolen vehicles, started investigating the thefts in November 2024. He added that what happened Monday in Grand Blanc is happening in counties all over the state, and car dealers should take additional measures to secure their inventory.
