Another Former U.P. Tourist Court: the Fox Den Restaurant & Motel
It’s another one of the Upper Peninsula’s lost motels...lost and closed down along the highway.
This time around it’s the Fox Den Restaurant & Motel, south of Hulbert along M-28 and kitty-corner from the abandoned Macjo Motel. There seems to be an abundance of old former motels on this highway.
Located at 37511 M-28, the Fox was opened in the 1950s by Odessa Fox.

By the 2000s it was known as the Hulbert Hills Motel; if it was renamed before that, there doesn’t seem to be a record of it. The name ‘Fox Den’ could very well have been discontinued in the 1970s.
All that is left that shows there was once a motel here is a four-unit building, a short walking distance from the former small cafe’ (now a private residence). The unit sits nestled among the trees and looks like it’s still in good shape.....almost good enough to put up some travelers.
Will someone ever turn it back into a rustic little motel? Hope so. It would be a shame to let it just sit. Take a look at some images in the gallery below...
