The World’s 4th Longest Wooden Roller Coaster is in Michigan
The World’s Longest Wood Roller Coaster may not be in Michigan, but the FOURTH longest is. It’s “Shivering Timbers” in Michigan’s Adventure Park in Muskegon. It opened in 1998 and is 5,383 feet in length (#1 is ‘The Beast’ at King’s Island, Ohio, at 7,359 feet).
What makes wood roller coasters better (in my opinion) than steel ones? THE NOISE. The wooden clickety-clacks, the creaks, the clatter, and the sway. Those elements make the coaster seem a tad more dangerous than the steelies.
What is a ride on ‘Shivering Timbers’ like?

In an edited description on Coasterpedia, “The ride starts with a left turn out of the station onto the 122 foot chain lift.....the train reaches its maximum speed of 57 mph. Following are two camelback hills, the first being 100 feet tall, and the second being 95 feet tall.....riders experience "ejector airtime".....it jumps a bunny hop, another camelback hill, a double-up hill, then turns around for the second half of the ride. Another bunny hop, another double-up hill, a small airtime hill and five bunny hop hills. The finale is a 630 degree helix, in which riders experience lateral g-force. The coaster then comes to the final brake run and turns 90 degrees back into the station.”
But don’t take their word for it. The gallery below has photos of the entire trip, followed by a video ride so you can experience what it’s like aboard Shivering Timbers...
