According to the Lansing State Journal, for some East Lansing residents, 2020 may mark the first year they file a city tax return.

The city's income tax took effect on Jan. 1, 2019, making this the first year people will either owe the city money or get a refund from East Lansing's coffers.

The budget accounts for the city refunding about 15 percent of collections, but that doesn't have a specific figure attached to it yet.

The city is still on track to bring in $9 million in revenue after refunds and administrative fees.

That money will be split between three funds, with 20 percent going to police and fire protection, 20 percent helping to fund infrastructure and 60 percent addressing unfunded pension liabilities through supplemental payments.

If you're wondering how to file a return with the city, you can get them several ways:

1. At the East Lansing public library.

2. At the city's treasury department.

3. Online at cityofeastlansing.com
