Is it just me or does this thing remind you of this?

I don't know if you've seen the latest in Covid-19 face mask protection equiptment. Well, it isn't a face mask per say. It's more of a face shield. And whereas most face shields are like riot cop gear that fit on the crown of your head and look like this:

This new ZShield Flex face shield from Zshield actually fits around your neck instead of the top of your head, is able to fold down, and will run you about $19.99 on their website.

It really reminds me of the cone of shame for your dogs, but now for us humans. And I guess my real question here is, does it work? There's so much open space over and around the sides.

Now while there is no test for the Zshield, they did do one for the basic top down face shield. And here's what they found.

If a normal cloth type face mask causes you breathing problems, fogs up your glasses while wearing them, and are generally uncomfortable, this is definitely a viable alternative. Any mask is better than no mask right?

The public seems to like them.

Other than the aesthetics of this thing, I'm not really against it. I can see where it can be very useful in certain situations and for folks who can't wear cloth masks. I do still have some feelings about it not completely covering your nose and mouth. But it is endorsed by healthcare professionals and the videos show that they do work and protect.

What does the CDC say about them?

  • A face shield is primarily used for eye protection for the person wearing it. At this time, it is not known what level of protection a face shield provides to people nearby from the spray of respiratory droplets from the wearer. There is currently not enough evidence to support the effectiveness of face shields for source control. Therefore, CDC does not currently recommend use of face shields as a substitute for masks.
  • However, wearing a mask may not be feasible in every situation for some people for example, people who are deaf or hard of hearing—or those who care for or interact with a person who is hearing impaired. Here are some considerations for individuals who must wear a face shield instead of a mask:
    • Although evidence on face shields is limited, the available data suggest that the following face shields may provide better source control than others:
      • Face shields that wrap around the sides of the wearer’s face and extend below the chin.
      • Hooded face shields. (CDC)

Again, I have some issues with it myself but this thing is definitely better than no mask at all.

And you're gonna look like your dog in the cone of shame.

Accept it. Live with it. Be safe my friends.
