Do You Remember the Great Blizzard of 1978?
I remember that massive snow storm back in 1978 and believe me when I say, unbelievable!
At the time of the storm, I was working at a different radio station in Lansing and you would not believe how much snow hit the entire mid-Michigan area.
The snow was so deep that it was literally impossible to drive down any road in the state of Michigan.
According to mlive.com:
During the '78 event, the National Weather Service said snowfall amounts included 30 inches in Muskegon (hello, lake effect) and just over 19 inches in Grand Rapids and Lansing. Flint had 9.9 inches and Detroit had 8.2. Southeast Michigan saw lower snowfall amounts because it had rain instead of snow for some of the storm window.
That was the worst blizzard ever back in 1978. And trust me when I tell you that just about everything was closed during that 3-day snow blizzard.
The exact dates of the storm were January 26 into part of Friday January 27.
Somehow I found my way into work to do my air shift and all we did was announce school and business closings. It was absolutely crazy at the time.
And you know how you always see cars in ditches due to bad weather? During the blizzard of 1978, an estimated 100,000 cars were abandoned on Michigan highways.
I do remember seeing a lot of snowmobilers out and about during the '78 blizzard. It was literally impossible to drive your car anywhere without getting stuck in the snow.
Mlive.com adds:
"A typical big snowstorm in the Great Lakes lasts 12 to 24 hours at any one spot. The Blizzard of '78 produced snow for 48 hours or more in Michigan."
We haven't seen a blizzard since the Great Blizzard of 1978!
