Did This Michigan Village Exist or Not? Irwin, in Macomb County
Here’s one I need help with.....the ‘possible’ village of Irwin.
Did it or did it not even exist? If not, why is there a road sign with the town name “Irwin” on it? The sign doesn’t look that old at all...not weatherbeaten, rusty or even bullet holes. It’s easily found as you head north on True Road toward the junction of True and Irwin Roads in Macomb County.
There is nothing at that junction. No old buildings or anything that suggests there was once a village here. I tried internet searching for Michigan ghost towns and small towns, coming up empty.

I also went through R.L. Dodge’s “Michigan Ghost Town” books and found zero. Even the reliable “Michigan Place Names” book showed absolutely nothing.
Even checking old atlases dating back to 1875 showed nothing; possibly a shop, but no mention of a village, or even a landowner by the name of ‘Irwin’. There is indeed a road named ‘Irwin’, and most Michigan roads are named after the town it leads to. The sign that boasts the name ‘Irwin’ is not a sign that tells you which road is coming up next, it’s a town/village sign.
Irwin is located (I guess, right?) in Macomb County’s Harrison Township. Any information from any Michigan historian or Macomb County resident will be greatly appreciated.
