Buddy's gave us Detroit-style pizza now Pizza Hut gives it to America,

For many years Detroit-style pizza was a bit of a Michigan secret, well now that secret is being shared with the country, thanks to one pizza chain.

Detroit- style pizza got its start in the Big-D, at a bar/restaurant called Buddy's after the end of World War II.  All credit for the delicious pie goes to Gus Guerra and his wife who first served the pizza at their East side bar.  The story goes 'Anna got a square, steel tray that was used on the assembly line and used it to make the deep-dish pizza', and just like that a Detroit favorite was created.  The Bar in Detroit still serves the dish and they are still using the same pan's that Anna Guerra first baked the pizzas in, other  Buddy's locations have opened up but the first is still operating.

Detroit-style pizza is a square or rectangle pizza with cheese spread right to the edges of the pan, then served with the sauce of top.  By spreading the cheese it makes for a crispy cheesy crust and a mouthful of delicious.

The love of Buddy's Detroit-style pizza has spread across Michigan, and even here in Mid-Michigan with several restaurants serving the pie.  The crispy crunchy crust is light and airy then the delicious cheese is melted and gooey and top that off with delicious sauce.  The pizza is so delicious that you don't even need to add any toppings

Pizza Hut's Chief Brand Officer David Graves says  the Detroit-style pizza is something they have seen rising across the country, and they get that many may not be very familiar with the pizza, so they have created a pizza box that explains  what the pie is made of and how the cheese goes all the way to the edges.

If you are trying Detroit-style for the first time, my recommendation to you is to go for the corner pieces.  They are the crispy best.

The New York Post says many Americans are 'confused' about the term Detroit-style pizza, but most are enjoying the delicious taste.
