Inside an Old 1860’s One-Room Schoolhouse, Macomb County

This old schoolhouse first appeared here when I did a post on the no-town of Thoringtonville, The land was named after two land owners, Mary Thorington and C.C Thorington. The only two things that show there may have been a town here is the Brabb Cemetery and this old schoolhouse. To read my first installation of Thoringtonville, CLICK HERE.

Now, an interesting note: the person who took the inside shots of the schoolhouse refers to this school as the "Crissmanville" school. There is scant info on a 'Crissmanville', other than it is indeed the name of the schoolhouse, located at 66885 Mound Road in Thoringtonville. The info I found says the school was built sometime in the 1860's. It's amazing that it still stands...but who knows for how long?

An actual area called Crissmanville may have existed just two miles south of Thoringtonville. At the junction of 29 Mile Rd and Mound Rd was land once owned by a man named A.J. Crisman in the late 1800's, which makes sense that the area was named after him. There was even another old one-room schoolhouse just a few feet down from the Crisman property, but it was torn down in order to build a housing community.

But what is the legitimacy of the area called 'Thoringtonville'? Was it a real village or just some cute land name given to it by the Thorington family? It's a puzzler. Any outside info on Thoringtonville or Crissmanville is extremely welcome. This area in in Washington Township within Macomb County. Strangely enough, Thoringtonville IS on the map.
