“Somewhere In Time”‘ (the Day I Came Face-To-Face With Christopher Reeve)
- In June 1980, I happened to be on Mackinac Island when Christopher Reeve & Jane Seymour were shooting the film "Somewhere In Time."Back then, restrictions at the Grand Hotel were looser and people were free to walk in front, onto the porch, and into the lobby...can't do that these days, unless you're a guest.
Needless to say, I was fortunate enough to watch the director, Jeannot Szwarc, shoot a couple of scenes.
And, as an added bonus, I was able to come face-to-face (sorta) with Christopher Reeve. I was walking up one of the downtown streets when who was coming right toward me, riding a bicycle with his girlfriend? Yup, Mr. Reeve. I looked up at him, and he looked straight at me as well. Nothing polite - or even impolite - just a kind of look like he was thinking "he recognizes me; this is kinda awkward." But hey - I'll take it. After all, this WAS Superman.
On the south end of the island, west of the Grand Hotel, Reeve & Seymour shot their famous "is it you?" scene. At that exact spot is a commemorative plaque for all visitors to see and re-enact their own version of that part of the movie.
It's very easy to find: Just keep walking down the boardwalk until it ends. A few feet ahead is a group of trees; amidst & underneath the trees is the plaque.
Lots of Michiganders love that movie so I suggest you go up and visit that site on Mackinac Island as you take your own personal tour of Michigan.
