A century old house on the north end of Grand Ledge, built by one of the community's founding families and at one time utilized as a hospital, was destroyed by fire Tuesday night.

The more than 8,000 square foot, three story home at 815 North Clinton Street, vacant for the last six months, had been under renovation but was empty at around 8 p.m. when the first call came in to 911 reporting the fire.

According to the Lansing State Journal, the house, which was built around the turn of the century, was a total loss.

Four fire departments and 50 firefighters responded to the blaze.  The fire was under control within an hour, but firefighters were on scene until nearly 4 a.m. putting out flames.
