MICHIGAN GHOST TOWN: The Remains of Cathro

Cathro is just one of many, many ghost towns found in Alpena County. It was founded along the old Detroit & Mackinac Railway, which has been ripped out since then
(SEE PHOTOS).

Today, Cathro is an unincorporated community about ten miles northwest of Alpena; in 1894 the town was named after the town's original postmaster, Elijah Cathro, who was also a successful farmer. The post office closed in 1955.

In 1918 the town had grown to a population of a whoppin' 65 and included a blacksmith shop, church, general store and shingle mill.

By 1925 the population had grown even more, up to 125.

As with many northern Michigan towns, businesses failed once the railroads folded and the lumber trade dwindled. What's left of Cathro can be found just south of the  Cathro Community Baptist Church and a half mile down from the Cathro Road / Lacomb Road intersection.
