Unless you grew up in Michigan, you may be unaware of the magnitude of the state's beauty.

The only state in the US with two peninsulas, Michigan truly offers something for everyone. The state has more shoreline than any other except for Alaska, and thanks to that, has some spectacular beaches.

Michigan's beach towns are a popular vacation destination, not only for their proximity to the Great Lakes, but for other reasons as well--such as unique antique shops and nearby wineries.

Along the shores of Lakes Michigan, Superior, Huron and Erie, you'll find nearly 130 lighthouses, sand dunes, cliffs, and incomparable rock hunting opportunities. Inland water activity offerings include kayaking, canoeing, tubing and sailing. There are also dozens of must-see springs and falls (not the seasons, although those are breathtaking too).

The state's most popular tourist destination is Mackinac Island, situated near Mackinaw City and the Mackinaw Bridge (all pronounced Mack-in-naw). Michigan residents and out-of-staters alike flock to the region every summer to take a step back in time and enjoy the comparatively cool weather.

The Upper Peninsula features attractions such as the Soo Locks, Tahquamenon Falls and Kitchitikipi Spring. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a Michigan treasure as well.

But what do Michiganders tell newcomers are the can't-miss things to do? Scroll through our gallery to find out. You might even find some vacation inspiration!
