‘Big Penny’, the Bridge That Eats Trucks: Lansing, Michigan
This bridge in Lansing is almost 100 years old...and is known for something else entirely.
The bridge is only twelve feet tall...and trucks and other large vehicles have gotten even larger over the years. Therefore the inevitable: the bridge has claimed the lives of 76 trucks since they started counting in 2004.
The bridge has lovingly been named “Big Penny, the Truck Munching Bridge” sitting near the entrance of Lansing's Potter Park Zoo. Not only have some trucks met their fate here, but also campers and RVs. Recently, a local group has installed some 'munching sharp teeth' overhead, as if Penny is waiting on her lunch.
So many vehicles have taken the challenge and failed, as they've gotten stuck under the bridge - much to the delight of nearby motorists who have their phones or cameras ready.
Formerly called the Canadian National Railway bridge, there are plenty of warnings for oncoming traffic in each direction about the low height of the bridge. And, according to the Lansing State Journal, “there's a digital sign with flashing warning lights that will turn on if an over-height truck approaches.”
Just be alerted: Big Penny has a pair of silver munching teeth on both sides of the bridge – and if you are not sure how tall your truck or camper is.....if you dare to attempt to drive under, you will find out.
