For the first time this winter, we actually had a wind chill advisory for today putting the wind chill temperature at -22 to -25 below zero.   That's what we call brutally cold.

So what are the best ways to stay warm when it's ridiculously cold?

Number one on the list is bundle up and swap out the leggings.  Piling on a few extra layers is a great way to stay warm.  Keeping your core warm is especially important when temperatures dip below freezing.

For ladies who love wearing leggings, try swapping them out for long underwear.  Here's a bonus:  Most long underwear is meant to dry quickly, so leftover snow and slush won't leave your legs damp.

Number two on the list, indulge in foods that help you keep warm.  For me personally, hot chocolate does the trick.  Try soups, spicy foods, hot coffee and teas to cut down the chill.

Here's tip number three, keep your toes warm.  Hypothermia is most likely to begin in extremities like your hands and feet.  So keeping your toes warm is important.

Whether you're walking to work or just around the block, make sure to wear sturdy, insulated shoes that will prevent slips on slick surfaces and keep your feet dry.

Even on days when you take your kids sledding or ice skating, it's important to stay warm and have fun at the same time.  There are several ways to stay warm when it's brutally cold.   Just click here on nbcwashington.com.
