It’s a Michigan village where time seems to stand still: Applegate, in the Thumb’s Sanilac County.

Applegate’s origins go back to 1856 when a sawmill was built and began operating by settler George Pack. From there. The village began to prosper, with a creamery, farming, and the railroad which came through, bringing travelers, visitors, and more potential residents.

It was the depot that made the biggest difference. According to Thumbwind, "The depot...symbolized progress, fueling economic growth and cementing Applegate’s role in regional commerce...A walk down Main Street in those days reveals sturdy storefronts and busy sidewalks.”

Among the handful of businesses were J.H. Stecker’s general store, post office, bank, Garbutt Brothers Hardware, and the Applegate Creamery.

The local churches hosted services, weddings, bazaars and dinners, further cementing the bonds among the residents.

Applegate thrived into the 20th century, becoming a perfect example of a Midwest small town. Although not the bustling village it once was, a few historic buildings remain in Applegate, oozing historic charm and holding untold stories that have been lost to time.
