Detroit's Southwestern High School had a good run...but a good run is never long enough.

The school was built in 1921 at a cost of six hundred and forty thousand dollars. The dedication ceremony in April 1922 was elaborate: numerous speeches by local politicians and city officials were overshadowed by a parade of soldiers from nearby Fort Wayne parading through the streets playing “The Stars and Stripes Forever”.

The school was doing well, with an estimated student body of one thousand and fifty five. However, after almost one hundred years, in February of 2012 it was announced that Southwestern High was closing that summer. This didn't set well with students or their parents, and during the remainder of spring, they rallied and protested to save their school. Ironically, even though it was a peaceful protest, some students would up being expelled for their participation. That makes no sense to me...they were kicked out of the same school they were trying to save? And then the school closed shortly afterward?

Unfortunately by this time there were only 583 students, when there were accommodations for 1,600. But true to its threat, the school closed for good in July 2012. Plans for renovation are continuous...

Now take a look inside and see how the school looks in its current state – sadly vandalized and looted.
