One of America’s most popular drive-in restaurants was the iconic Dog ‘n Suds. Hot dogs, coneys, and root beer were their livelihood.

The first Dog n' Suds appeared in 1953 in Champaign, Illinois with "The World's Creamiest" root beer. Their first logo featured a dog that looked exactly like Walt Disney’s ‘Pluto’ wearing a chef’s hat. Sure enough, Disney came calling with a cease & desist, and Dog ‘n Suds was forced to alter the design. When the new dog was revealed, he didn’t look like Pluto anymore, but he now looked like that other Disney dog, Goofy. They were able to keep that one. Go figure.

By 1968 there were over 650 Dog 'n Suds drive-ins throughout the country – a place where kids could hang out while cruisin’ the avenue.

Once the business was sold in the 1970s, Dog ‘n Suds began its downward spin. The food was still good, but with so much new competition with fast food joints popping up everywhere, some locations began closing.

Michigan is now down to just one operating Dog ‘n Suds, located in the town of Montague. The abandoned one you will see in the gallery below is located in Muskegon.

By the way, the Dog ‘n Suds pooch does have a name.....’Rover’.
