Police shot and killed a Mulliken teenage Saturday night about five miles west of Grand Ledge after a physical altercation erupted between the teen and an officer.

An Eaton County sheriff's sergeant shot Deven Guildford, 17, dead about 8:30 p.m., according to Michigan State Police. The sergeant had pulled Guildford over along M-43 just west of Cochran Road in Roxand Township.

The stop turned into a physical confrontation at some point, after which the sergeant shot and killed Guildford, according to police. The sergeant sustained "significant" injuries that required medical attention at a local hospital, according to the MSP.

Police have not disclosed the nature of the traffic stop or what exactly transpired between Guildford and the sergeant to prompt the shooting. The name of the sergeant, who has been placed on paid administrative leave, is being withheld at the time.

MSP are investigating the shooting, per the Eaton County Sheriff's Office request.
