Additional Information

Congregation Kehillat Israel is sponsoring a community dialogue on education as part of its study of issues surrounding public education, a project of its Committee on Social Justice. (In our tradition, this is called Tikkun Olam, which means “mending the world.”)
Our goal is to facilitate a positive dialogue among knowledgeable and active educators and public officials in our community, looking at the challenges facing public education and some of the creative and innovative work taking place to address these challenges.
We invite members of our congregation and the general public to listen to the presentations of our panel and to join in the dialogue with the questions and observations. We hope that this dialogue provides insight and information about public education at the local and state levels. We hope that the dialogue encourages participants to support and be active in finding roles to strengthen public education in our community.
We have an extraordinary panel. Dr. Donald Heller, Dean of the College of Education at MSU is our facilitator. Panel members are:
Yvonne Caamal Canul, Superintendent of the Lansing School District;
Dr. Donna Kaplowitz, Assistant Professor in the College of Residential Arts and Humanities and former Board member of East Lansing Public Schools;
Dr. Bettie Menchik, evaluator for the Charter School Office of the Michigan Department of Education and consultant to Michigan public schools;
Dr. Robyne Thompson, Superintendent of the East Lansing School District
Representative Andy Schor, Michigan House of Representatives, 68th District
