Allegiant Air has dropped its Lansing to Orlando route, leaving the region's airport without a direct flight to Florida for the first time in several years.

Allegiant's route from Capital Region International AIrport to Orlando Sanford, Florida, ended Jan. 4.  The Las Vegas based budget airline says passenger demand was not high enough for the twice weekly flight, which started in November 2012.  There are no immediate plans to return to Lansing.

Allegiant now flies out of Grand Rapids, the next closest market, and Toledo, Ohio, which serves Detroit.

The loss of the flight is disappointing, said Bob Selig, executive director of the Capital Region Airport Authority.  There's a chance that they'll be back later on this year, so they haven't given up on Lansing.
