I've got two for you and the first one is out of a job too.

Who remembers Geoffrey the Giraffe?

Then there's Melman from Madagascar. Hilarious.

And then there's this guy.

We know the why he came down and when he'll be coming back.

“The Giraffe has been a local landmark for more than 50 years, so keeping it safe is a priority as we continue the remodel project for our West Saginaw store’s Express location,” said Jeremiah Hernandez, store director of the West Saginaw Meijer. “We know how much the community values it being part of their Meijer shopping experience and expect the Giraffe to return later this fall.” (WILX)

A lot of articles are addressing the Lansing icon coming down from his perch atop the Meijer gas station.

But he's been up there for 50 years. Why and how did he get up there?

According to our friends at Lansing Facts:

While hilarious, not so fast. And not so true.

We scoured the interwebs to find the truth for you and here's what we dug up.

This Giraffe in Lansing is installed on top of a Meijer gas station canopy. The statue has been here since the late 1970s or early 1980s. The Meijer store originally used animal statues to mark parking lot sections in order to help customers remember where they parked. When the store switched to letter signs instead, the giraffe was saved and moved to where it is now. (roadarch)

And from a flickr photo gallery comment:

The rest of the animals are now on top of EDRU skating rink.

That's what I thought... but couldn't find any proof online. Apparently the Lansing Meijer/Edru animals aren't important enough to be on Wikipedia yet. (flickr)

We took a look on Google Maps and that sounds like it could be true.
