Dr. Jeffrey VanWingen of Grand Rapids has some great tips for keeping your family safe during the Coronavirus outbreak.

With all of the stockpiling people are doing right now, everyone is bringing a lot of groceries into their house. These groceries have probably been touched by hundreds of other people, so it's important to disinfect them first thing when they come into your house.

Dr. VanWingen gives you some very practical, but useful tips for keeping your household safe, including leaving your groceries outside for three days if possible. He also talks about how long the virus can live on certain surfaces. When the video was made, they made a mistake about cardboard, but have updated to show the accurate info that Coronavirus can live on cardboard for up to 24 hours.

Here are a few of the key points Dr. VanWingen gives when it comes to groceries.

  • Sanitize the counter or table you will unload the groceries on before bringing them in.
  • Establish a dirty spot to place the groceries when unpacking, and a clean spot to put them in after you clean them.
  • Disinfect all plastic, glass, and metal packaging.
  • Throw away any unnecessary packaging, especially cardboard.
  • Try to put any items into clean containers if possible
  • Wash any reusable grocery bags.
  • Clean any fruits and veggies with soapy water.
