After just recently visiting Traverse City, and planning to hopefully go back next month, I'm very excited about the Traverse City State Hospital's announcement of hosting "Asylum After Dark," an after hours tour of the old psychiatric hospital. Known to be paranormal and surrounded by much myth, the tour will take you in the inner workings of the hospital, describing it's history and mysteries. Their website describes the night:

Take a step back in time and experience a night at the Northern Michigan Asylum. Explore one of our most popular cottages from attic to basement as scenes from our historic past are played out in dramatic fashion. The sights, sounds… and darkness will leave you wanting to explore more! Join us for a bonfire after your experience and take home an exclusive piece of asylum history. Tours are 30 minutes long and will run every 20 minutes. Tours will run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30, 8:00, 8:20, 8:40, 9:00, 9:20, 9:40, 10:00, 10:20, 10:40. Click the Event Link or call B50 The Village Store to book your ticket now.

The land that the hospital sites on is sprinkled with abandoned and condemned buildings that are still very important to the history of the the building. Plans are slowly being put in place to renovate these stand alone structures. The site is also home to the Hippie Tree, a tangled web of trees spray painted deep in the woods behind the hospital, which is said to possibly be a portal to the other side, and where the spirits of those who passed away at the hospital are rumored to roam.

The tour costs $45 per person or $80 per couple, (Ages 18 & over ID required).
