Thousands Attended Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk
Have you ever walked across the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day? This tradition of the Mackinac Bridge Walk actually began back in 1958.
The Mackinac Bridge officially opened in 1957. I've been to the beautiful Mackinac Bridge countless times and yet I have never walked across the entire bridge during the Labor Day Bridge Walk.
According to mlive.com:
“We’re so glad to have had 26,000 people from across Michigan and beyond join us for this beloved event on such a perfect day,” said Mackinac Bridge Authority Bridge Director Kim Nowack. “As anyone who has walked the bridge knows, we see so many sunny smiles and happy faces during the walk, and that was certainly what we observed this morning.”
If I ever get the opportunity, I would really like to walk across the Mackinac Bridge. I can understand why everyone would be all smiles walking across the world's fifth largest suspension bridge, which connects both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
Mlive.com adds:
The number of walkers increased by 5,000 over last year’s total, a news release from the Michigan Department of Transportation states. Led by Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, walkers and runners participating in the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness Run crossed the 5-mile bridge from St. Ignace to Mackinaw City.
I imagine it's like being on top of the world, so to speak. Not only do you get five miles of great exercise by walking across the Mackinac Bridge, but the view itself has to be absolutely spectacular.
