Recently, The Washington Post published an article asking for people to share their tales of hardship. I can only imagine that the responses were overwhelming. Especially this year.

In fact, according to another publication from The Washington Post, analytics show that, "Nearly 12 million renters will owe an average of $5,850 in back rent and utilities by January." It's not surprising that Go Fund Me fundraisers have been popping up all over the place. People need help. What is surprising, though, is that one local story caught the eye of a very well known celebrity.

Taylor Swift just made the news yesterday for donating $13,000 to two separate mothers who were featured in The Washington Post's story about those tales of hardship. Nikki Cornwell of Nashville, TN and Michigan mother of four, Shelbie Selewski.

Shelbie, 29, is currently unemployed not just because of the pandemic but because she has an at risk daughter who was born recently with a collapsed lung. As well, her fiance also lost his job at the beginning of the pandemic. She did qualify for unemployment and had help from some friends and family but as we all know...bills don't take a break. The family even sold their tv, their Playstation 4, anything they could to get by.

Currently $2,100 behind on rent and utilities, Shelbie started a gofundme after being featured in The Washington Post's article earlier this week. The goal of $26,000 is even closer to being accomplished thanks to Taylor Swift.

With her donation Swift wrote,

No one should have to feel the kind of stress that's been put on you. I hope you and your beautiful family have a great holiday season. Love, Taylor.

With Swift's generous gift, Shelbie's gofundme is up to nearly $21,000. If you'd like to donate you can find the gofundme here.

I feel like the chaos of this year sometimes clouds the fact that, despite the political arguments online, the constant clashing of opinions regarding the pandemic, the general anger that seems to be in the air this year, there are good people out there helping others who really need it. And that's what I like to focus on.

Remember, helping someone out doesn't always mean giving a monetary donation. Simple acts of kindness go a long way. I'd like to issue a challenge to myself as well as anyone who reads this to find a way to do something nice for someone else today. Because if there's one thing I'm 100% sure of is that we all could use a little more kindness in our lives. 💗
