According to USA Today, retailers are already getting into the Christmas spirit.  AT Macy's Herald Square, Holiday Lane is open, complete with rows of the Elf on The Shelf, reindeer cloaked in plaid, and Nutcrackers counting the days until Christmas.

Lights and ornaments will start appearing in Walmart stores over the next two weeks, and Sears will start selling wreaths, stockings and other decor by Oct 2.

Like it or not, early sales have been popping up for decades, though the National Retail Federation says the practice has gotten more attention in recent years because of the buzz generated by social media.

NRF says stores are simply giving customers what they want.  Retailers will always react to trends based on the consumer needs and wants.
