The Detroit Free Press is reporting that after hearing from many of its members, the commission decided to delay its vote and would take more time to look into this more thoroughly. They formed a special committee to look into a potential Capitol gun ban.

Michigan's Attorney General Dana Nessel says that the state commission does have the authority to prohibit guns in our state capitol. Nessel said "the vast majority of State Capitol buildings around the country prohibit guns and just like we do in courtrooms all around the states, we ought to be banning guns."

Relying on past decisions and current state laws, our Attorney General said that the commission can regulate firearms within the areas that are under its control, and that would include our State Capitol in Lansing.

State Representative Lee Chatfield said "you have a right to protest and you also have a right to bear arms, but you don't have a constitutional right to do both at the same time."
