The Portland City  Manager, Tutt Gorman said that an ice jam is causing the flooding that has so far forced 50 Portland residents to evacuate their homes.

Gorman's advice for residents near the river, is if they see water approaching their homes they should leave immediately.

Both City and Ionia County officials are continuing to monitor the situation to see if more action is needed.  Officials are looking for temporary shelters for the people that had to be evacuated from their homes.

The threat of flooding remains in effect in the Portland area until tomorrow.
