Package theft has become such an issue in Michigan and around the country that thieves have received a dictionary entry that perfectly embodies their crime: Porch Pirates. Looting the mail-order dreams of millions of Americans and robbing the joy of online shopping for the masses, this kind of crime is so unsettling because it happens on our property, with the perpetrator sometimes feet away from our loved ones. Is there a state that is a haven, or at least safer than the rest of the USA, for home-delivered packages?

According to Security.org, nearly $8 billion worth of merchandise was stolen from homes and businesses in 2023 alone. Capital One Shopping reveals that equates to roughly 75% of Americans who ordered retail delivery had a package stolen.
Revealing Which State Suffers the Greatest Amount of Porch Piracy
Surprisingly, according to a recent study by iPostal1, the two states with the worst porch pirate problem aren't part of the Continental United States. Alaska and Hawaii are the epicenters of front deck parcel theft in the United States.
While no state is entirely free of package theft, one stands above the others as the state with the fewest instances of Porch Piracy: Michigan. While that may not be much comfort if you've had a parcel pilfered, it does mean Mitten residents are taking this crime seriously and are finding ways to keep it to a minimum.
Ring Doorbells and similar products can deter thieves. Still, the best way to avoid having your packages stolen in Michigan is to send them to a staffed establishment, such as the United States Post Office or a third-party mail business.
