Oh, Michigan moms! How can we ever thank you enough for the amazing job you did in raising us, the kids of Generation X? You kept us on our toes, you made us explore the outdoors, and most of all, you gave us the freedom to be ourselves.

You trusted us to be out of sight, but never out of mind. How Michigan moms knew where we were prior to the advent of phone tracking remains a mystery. You knew that as long as we were home for dinner, we were safe and sound. You let us take risks and make mistakes, and you were always there to catch us when we fell.

You made us eat at the table, which at the time felt like a chore, but now I understand the importance of sharing a meal together as a family. You taught us how to have a conversation, how to listen to one another, and how to appreciate the food on our plates.

You raised us to look people in the eye, to behave in public, and to look for the best in people. Michigan moms of Generation Xers also taught us that not everyone is to be trusted, that's why you gave us our 'code word' for pick-ups.

You even helped us get into a little trouble, just so we could learn how to get out of it. You knew that life was full of challenges and that we needed to learn how to be resourceful and independent. You were always there to offer guidance and support, even when we made mistakes.

And most importantly, you kept all the really bad stuff we did off of Dad's radar. You shielded us from the consequences of our actions but also gave us the space to learn from our mistakes.

So thank you, Michigan moms, for everything you did for us. You shaped us into the people we are today, and we are forever grateful. You gave us the tools we needed to succeed in life, and we will always carry your love and wisdom with us.
