One of the most popular and largest meteor showers of the year is about to take place, and if the weather cooperates, Michiganders should be able to enjoy seeing up to 60-200 meteors per hour. It's a true spectacle under the right conditions, especially during its peak.

The Perseid meteor shower is a late summer nighttime event that offers one of the best shooting star displays of the year.

The Perseids, named after the constellation Perseus, are debris left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the Sun approximately every 133 years. The debris from the comet enters Earth's atmosphere and burns up, creating the bright streaks of light known as meteors.

Technically, the annual meteor shower has already started, as it runs from mid-July through September. However, things don't really ramp up until the peak.

When Will the Perseid Meteor Shower Peak?

According to Nasa, on most nights, only a few meteors will be visible each hour. Activity is expected to peak between Aug. 11 and 12. This is when the Perseids will be producing its peak rate of meteors. Again, if conditions are in your favor, you can see up to 200 meteors an hour.

How to Watch the Perseid Meteor Shower

You don't need any special equipment to enjoy the Perseid meteor shower. As long as the sky is clear, the meteors will be visible. The most important thing is to find a secluded spot away from city lights to avoid light pollution.

The only challenge is remembering when you need to go outside and look up. You might want to set a reminder in your phone.
