Cedar Point to Open Record-Breaking Roller Coaster in 2024
Thrill seekers have reason to be excited in 2024 - a record-breaking new roller coaster is set to be unveiled later this summer at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.
More than 400 feet high with top speeds of over 100 miles per hour, Top Thrill 2 is said to be "the world’s tallest and fastest triple-launch strata coaster".
What Is a "Triple-Launch Strata Coaster"?
Part of the adrenaline rush that comes from riding a roller coaster comes from that sudden acceleration to begin the ride. With a triple-launch coaster such as Top Thrill 2, that's going to happen three times during the experience.
According to Coasterpedia, "a strata roller coaster is any complete-circuit roller coaster with a height between 400 feet and 499 feet tall." Top Thrill 2 qualifies with a top height at 420 feet.
Exactly How Fast Will Top Thrill 2 Be?
Cedar Point claims its new Top Thrill 2 roller coaster is designed to fling riders from zero to 74 mph on Launch 1. The second backwards launch will reach 101 mph, with top speeds of 120 mph as the coaster propels riders through a 270-degree twist as its finale. Did we mention that last part is from 420 feet in the air?

To be clear, Top Thrill 2 is not claiming to be the tallest roller coaster in the world - that honor belongs to Kingda Ka in New Jersey at 456 feet. Nor is it the fastest roller coaster in the world - that's the Formula Rossi in Abu Dhabi, reaching 149 mph.
Top Thrill 2 may accurately lay claim to being the tallest and fastest strata coaster in the world, because neither of the two roller coasters above fit the "strata" bill.
The exact "launch date" for Top Thrill 2 has not been announced yet, but the ride is expected to begin operations at Cedar Point sometime in the summer of 2024.
