If you're from Michigan, you know the infamous story of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. The Fitzgerald was a freighter that tragically sank in the winter of 1975 in Lake Superior. It was one of the largest ships on the Great Lakes during its time.

At the time of its sinking, the vessel was primarily transporting iron ore from the mines in Minnesota to steel mills in the Detroit and Ohio areas.

The History of the Edmund Fitzgerald

The Edmund Fitzgerald is the Titanic of Michigan, and just as famous to us as the name of the Titanic.

On the night of the disaster, the ship had lost contact with the shore and sank around 17 miles from the shores of Whitefish Point, Michigan.

The exact cause of the sinking is still not exactly known, as all 29 crew members lost their lives on the sinking.

Re-Imagining The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald:

The wreck itself has been told throughout the years, especially by singer Gordon Lightfoot, who commemorates the ship through a song.

Lightfoot unfortunately passed away in 2023, and this year on the anniversary of the sinking, the ship's bell which was recovered from the wreck, rang 30 times. One for each of those lost, as well as Lightfoot himself.

See below the reimagined version of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
