Your Favorite Sandwich Maker’s Favorite Sub Shop Just Closed 80% of Their Michigan Locations
Everyone likely has a favorite sub shop location. Maybe it's a national chain like Subway, Jimmy John's or Jersey Mike's. Perhaps it's a local spot like Gonella's in metro Detroit.
Southeast Michigan has been home to a sub shop chain with deep roots in Update New York, DiBella's. The chain is based in Rochester and began as an Italian grocer and quickly shifted to focusing on sub sandwiches. The chain has grown from their western New York base to locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.

At its peak, DiBella's had 5 locations in Michigan - all in the Detroit area. However at the end of September 2024, the chain abruptly closed each location in Michigan save for one location in Ann Arbor. That means previous locations in Troy, Warren, Shelby Twp and Bingham Farms are now gone.
What sets Debella's apart from other sub shops? Many will point to the chain's bread - white, white, sesame and uniquely 'everything.' The chain serves both hot subs like cheesesteaks and cold cut subs.
After news of the chain's closure - with 4 of the 5 Michigan locations or 80% closing - hit Reddit many were quick to comment how much they'll miss the chain.

RIP to the GOAT. :(
The best sub place imo, glad I went to the one off Hall Road over the summer, RIP.Absolutely devastating. I’m only sorry to not have one last run to the Troy store. Just thought they’d always be there.
we would go in several times per week. It was always delicious.
The Debella's chain appears to be constricting a bit back to their Upstate New York base with Indiana locations in the Indianapolis area closing recently as well.
