They were known for their fried chicken, and were a staple of good food reasonably priced in a casual setting. It was Lannings’ restaurant on Leonard Street, Grand Rapids west side. They had been there for years but closed back in 2008.

What happened to the popular spot? Lannngs' was a father-and-son ownership, Dave and Jon Hartger, but decided to close due to slow business and moved the restaurant to 28th Street. I don't remember if they actually did move, but if so they didn't last long and closed for good. Meanwhile, the Leonard street location sat idle for over 15-years and had become an eyesore of the up and coming neighborhood. Well, that is about to change!

DeVries is a fifth-generation, family-owned jewelry store that has been located on Leonard Street since 1901. The new location long-planned at the Lanning’s site is just down the street from their current location at 411 Leonard St. NW.

The new store will be more than twice the size at the new location, which will provide much needed additional space for customers, showcasing products, in-house goldsmith services and possibly some small events on the second floor of the new building.

Congratulation DeVries!
