Serving Up Nostalgia: This is Michigan’s Best ‘Old School’ Restaurant

While there are tons of trendy restaurants in Michigan, sometimes you just want to kick it old school. You want dine somewhere that's been serving up the same delicious comfort food for generations.

Foodie publication, Lovefood.com, sought to find the best old-school restaurant in each state serving up pure nostalgia, using reviews, awards, and the genuine experiences of their team. Their front-runners range from one-of-a-kind diners to high-end steakhouses.

Lovefood's pick for the top old school eatery in Michigan is Sinbad's Restaurant and Marina.

Over looking the Detroit River, Sinbad's has been serving up seafood, steaks, and great views to Detroit's boating crowd and waterfront-dining lovers since 1949.

Bothers-in-law “Buster” Blancke and “Van” VanHollebecke transformed a ramshackle building that previously was a prohibition-era speakeasy into Sinbad's. It became the the Detroit River Racing Association’s gathering spot and quickly gained popularity with locals and visitors alike.

Though the restaurant was remodeled in 1998 and over 3,000 feet of mahogany inlay was used and other upgrades were made, the owners say not much else has changed since they opened, the nautical theme is still intact and:

Everything else is pretty much the same: we still hand-crumble the Blue Cheese, the chowder and chili are still terrific.

Sinbad's is open for brunch, lunch, and dinner Tuesday through Sunday 11a.m. to 9p.m.

On the menu you'll find seafood delights like Great Lakes Perch, Pickerel, Shrimp, Scallops, Lobster, Alaskan King Crab Legs, Atlantic Salmon, and Orange Roughy.

Sinbad's is also famous for its house-made Clam Chowder and Angus Beef Sirloin Steaks.

You'll find Sandwiches, Salads, Soups, Burgers, Chicken Dishes, and Pasta Specials as well.

Sinbad's offers a full bar with spirits, cocktails, wine, and beer. There's a large selection of ice cream drinks too, to cool you off after a long day of boating in the sun.

Desserts include Turtle Cheesecake, Dutch Apple Pie, and Ultimate Chocolate Cake.

Sinbad's seems to have a real appreciation for their guests, offering up discounts on drinks and appetizers during “Customer Appreciation Happy Hour” Tuesday-Friday, from 3p.m.-6p.m.
