Michigan Spot Crowned Among 10 Best Bike Towns in U.S.
One Michigan spot is getting national recognition for its exceptional cycling routes and vibrant mountain biking scene!
Outside Magazine has named the top ten biking towns in the U.S. To determine the list, they analyzed data from People for Bikes, a non-profit that ranks the best places to bike on factors like speed limits and cycling infrastructure.
Outside also took into account ratings on a town’s numbers of bike lanes and lane connectivity from League of American Bicyclists, a non-profit that promotes cycling through education and advocacy. Info on trails and mountains from Trailforks was considered as well.
Coming in at No. 7 on Outside's list of the best bike cities in the U.S. is Harbor Springs, Mich.
According to Outside, Harbor Springs earned an outstanding score in People for Bikes connectivity rankings and has a total of 54 bike trails.
Cyclists say they feel they can pedal safely anywhere, thanks to low traffic, low speed limits and the Little Traverse Wheelway - a scenic, 26 mile trail that connects Harbor Springs with other communities along Little Traverse Bay. Harbor Springs got a score of 92 from People For Bikes.
Outside also shouts out the mountain biking scene at The Highlands. Not only are there 22 miles of mountain biking trails for cyclists of all levels, but also a chairlift you take to get to the bike park. It's $35 for a daily lift ticket and $99 for a season pass. Kids 6 to 17 can get a season pass for $75.
Outside Magazine's pick for the best bike town in the U.S. is Crested Butte Colorado. It got a People for Bikes score of 87, a gold rating from the League of American Bicyclists, and 247 bike trails total.
